New installments of ongoing series: at FPR, Part 5 of Ancient Israel’s Canaanite Heritage; BCC posts Part 8 of the History of Correlation, which finally gets to Correlation; and Mormon Matters posts BiV’s latest Sunday School discussion (on Lesson 12). Okay, here are links to a few notable posts from the MA boxes, this week in reverse order to bring a little balance to the Force.

BYU scratches that 17 year itch

By: Geoff J - March 18, 2010

Well it took two overtime periods to get the job done, but the Cougars of BYU pulled off a victory over Florida today in the NCAA men’s basketball tournament. The last time BYU won a tourney game was in 1993. Well done Cougs!

BYU plays their next game Saturday. Let’s hope they play even better with that monkey off of their backs now. They will probably need it.

Final four for BYU?

By: Geoff J - March 15, 2010

Probably not, but SI.com sports writer Stewart Mandel chose BYU as his Cinderella team this year at least. I hope Mandel is underselling BYU of course…

Anyway, BYU fell to the #7 seed after dreaming of as high as a #3 seed a week or two ago. The good news is that BYU drew a Florida Gators team that has struggled mightily of late and that they are in the West region. If BYU can somehow manage to make it to the Sweet 16 they will be playing in Salt Lake City for the next two games (partially why Mandel went out on that limb).

In other news, the Mountain West Conference got 4 out of its 9 teams into the Dance this year which is double the number of teams the normally mighty Pac 10 managed. Also, Utah State fans are breathing a sigh of relief after sliding in just under the wire to nab the last at large bid from other bubble teams like Virginia Tech and Mississippi State. (USU got the bid much to the dismay of several ESPN talking heads so maybe they can use that as motivation to pull off an upset.)

The tournament kicks into gear on Thursday. Go Cougs!

March Madness is upon the Cougars of BYU

By: Geoff J - March 9, 2010

Woohoo! March is here.

Since BT is back up and running I figured I would bring my series of BYU sports posts back here now.

For those of you not paying attention to this sort of thing, BYU men’s basketball is in the midst of its winningest season ever. BYU already has 28 wins to go with its only 4 losses through the end of the regular season. The Cougs have been ranked in the top 10 this season and are currently ranked in the top 15. BYU is led this year by arguably the best player to come through Provo since Danny Ainge, junior guard Jimmer Fredette. (more…)
