Bloggernacle Awards 2005

By: Ronan - December 7, 2005

NOMINATIONS ARE NOW CLOSED. WAIT FOR US TO WORK OUR BALLOTING MOJO…..

The Bloggernacle Times hereby solicits your nominations for the Bloggernacle Awards 2005.*

Here’s how it works. Using the form below, provide nominations (in comments) for the Bloggernacle Awards. You can provide more than one. (Do so anonymously if you don’t want to offend your blog pals. We won’t peek at IP’s. Promise.) We will then choose the top 4 or 5 nominees and allow voting via a blogpoll. Hopefully this way we’ll get a better spread of nominees and avoid cliqueishness.

Easy. Fun. Utter navel-gaze. Best blogger winner will get a Mormon Archipelago T-shirt.

Write in category: quote of the year – a tie between Adam Greenwood (on Jim F.’s thread about being nicer people:

“I am fully aware that courtesy and soft-spokedness are Christian attributes. But Christ did not always gentle his tongue. He said mean things. He was contemptuous sometimes. Perhaps the true Christian will sometimes follow that example too.

What this suggests to me is that when I’ve been the target of meanness on the web, I should get over it quick.”

    and Aaron Cox:

“Point the second. Many are called but few are chosen. It is true that men are naturally inclined to love many women. And this is a reflection of God’s character and reflects the order of heaven. And Joseph introduced this but the world could not bear it. And because the world hath rejected this holy practice which would have renovated and purified the entire world, we see instead the results in the perversities of pornography and spilling seed that have been spoken of. Not to mention other rising tides of immorality and lasiviousness.

And so it is a great trial now for righteous men to withold unnaturally.”

Best small blog: Dave’s Mormon Inquiry

Best blogger: Julie Smith (wrote great book reviews)

Best new blog: Snarkernacle – provides the ‘Nacle with much needed in-house ridicule

Best post: “Why the Banner of Heaven Is Fake” – for better or worse, this post had more influence on the ‘Nacle and its future than any other post this year

Best thing about the bloggernacle 2005: Bannergate (growing pains the ‘Nacle had to go through)

Worst thing about the bloggernacle 2005: Bannergate (created lots of rancor)

Unsung hero: Bryce Inouye (always a reasonable voice, helps people fix coding)

Sorely missed: Steve Evans — though a lot of people were miffed at him for Bannergate, he has been a massive contributor to the ‘Nacle in the past

  11. What constitutes a small blog?

    Comment by Kim Siever — December 7, 2005 @ 11:02 am

  12. Kim,
I take that as meaning anything except T&S, M*, BCC, or Feminist Mormon Housewives.
    I may be mistaken though

    Comment by john scherer — December 7, 2005 @ 11:07 am

  13. I thought small blog meant blogs with only one author.

    Comment by danithew — December 7, 2005 @ 11:20 am

  14. Perhaps there should be a “best solo blogger” category. The term “small blog” may be problematic.

  20. I forgot to mention another reason I suggested Julie as best blogger (besides excellent book reviews) … her sharing of her “boring” (her word for it) conversion story. That is another worthy best post of the year candidate in my view.

Sorry for so much posting of comments. Just got me thinking. It’s been an interesting year in the ‘Nacle. Though some have been critical of how things are going, I think one could argue there have been many good things happening as well.

  23. My write-in, Best single comment:

Bryce I. on the now notorious 9M “Hitler” thread:

“WOW!! This is a perfect example of one of my favorite topics! Offense! Did you know that we as mormons find taking offense to be a favored pastime!? It has been well practiced at FHE, Sacrament Meeting, Priesthood Quorem, Relief Society and even Primary! Its so well taught as a major principal of our religon that we practice it every time we walk out our front door! Its so easy, even kids can choose to be offended!!
Did you think that you could only be offended in person? Well say good bye to the olden days cause now we can even be offended by random people we’ve never met, nor ever will meet, on a private blog!!!! Yes thats right! Now you can sit and be offended by everyday life from the convienence of your own home! You dont even have to walk out that big front door to the scary world beyond!
Act now, and you can get a free sample of “Life as a constantly offended Mormon” by just emailing me at umc4life@hotmail.com and I’ll be happy to send you a piece of my mind anytime! Act now, supplies are limited due to frequent demand.”

  24. Thanks, John Scherer, for your memorable post pick. You and all the other folks who responded to me about it make my list of Top Instances of Healing Through Fellowship and Compassion, 2005, if that were a category. It isn’t, and it doesn’t need to be, but thank you, all of you, so much.

Steve Evans podcast with me would be my top Kind and Forgiving Gesture, 2005.

    Comment by Adam Greenwood — December 7, 2005 @ 11:54 am

  25. In that case, I’d like to decline the nomination of Our Thoughts for Best small blog.

    Comment by Kim Siever — December 7, 2005 @ 11:58 am

  26. Tim, actually that wasn’t Bryce I, it was Bryce… my brother. Not even close to the same person. Bryce I seems to actually take a breath before he types (and typically uses spell-check as well).

    Comment by Rusty — December 7, 2005 @ 12:05 pm

  27. Bryce I. on the now notorious 9M “Hitler” thread:

Er, did I miss something? For the record, that’s not me (the M* Bryce I)

Although I guess if I get an award for it, I might claim it as my own.

    Comment by Bryce I — December 7, 2005 @ 12:06 pm

  28. Ah, Rusty clears things up.

I’ve been confused myself over at 9M by your brother, Rusty. More than once I’ve asked myself, “When did I say that?”

Best thing about the bloggernacle 2005: The goodness of people.
Worst thing about the bloggernacle 2005: The image in my head of a bunch of those tiny plastic trolls (you know, the ones w/the brightly colored hair, that you roll in your hands quickly and the hair goes all neat? You frequently see these on the ends of pencils) pouncing on and biting Rusty. See comments 23 & 25, here.
Unsung hero: Gladys Knight w/laryngitis? Annegb. And Tom. (See recent guest post at BCC re: Mentally ill spousal support.)
Sorely missed: My mind, have you seen it?

  33. Rumors of Prudence’s disappearance just might have been greatly exaggerated, ye fiends of the infernal blogs!

    Comment by Prudence McPrude — December 7, 2005 @ 12:26 pm

  34. Rusty,

This is indeed just the nomination phase (I thought it best to do this so we don’t fall into the clique-trap, you know, the same old names). The final voting ballot will be determined by the frequency of nominations, so it’s a good thing to vote for people/blogs more than once so that they make the cut!

  39. Asking these questions is like asking what my favorite food is, or my favorite song. The answer is likely to change on a regular (daily?) basis. Today my favorite food is shepherd pie; tomorrow it’s chicken cordon bleu. Ahh well. Since it’s today, here’s how my personal choices look:

Best blog: Let’s nomimate T&S, BCC, M*, and FMH, of course. DMI, Mommy Wars, 9M. Hmm, I think I’m out of space on the ballot, that will have to do for now.
Best small blog: DMI, Mommy Wars, Thang.
Best blogger: Nate Oman; Steve Evans; Julie Smith; Elisabeth Calvert Smith (is she the only person to post at each of the big 3? there’s a reason — she’s good.) ; Wilfried Decoo; Dave Underhill; Adam Greenwood
Best commenter: Daniel Bartholomew; Rosalynde Welch; AnneGB and the golden butt.
Best new blog: I forget which ones are new. Mommy wars? Ldsblogs.org? Is Flanders new? How about Tomatoes? I need a chronology.
Best post: Unrequited love, by Rosalynde Welch. The Betsey post, and the Noah’s Ark post, and Rosalynde’s brother. The FMH series on whether lust is the girl’s fault. And Wilfried’s post about the convert who had to drink coffee.
Best thing about the bloggernacle 2005: The Bushman symposium at T&S (which, mark my words, is going to kick some serious a$$); ldsblogs.org creates a very useful portal; general explosive growth of the community
Worst thing about the bloggernacle 2005: bannergate bad feelings; lack of Steve; lack of Kristine
Unsung hero: Me, da**it! No one sings about the Hawaiians. (Probably because our names are too hard to say). But how about Steve; Bryce; Gordon Smith; Jim F.; Russell Fox
Sorely missed: Steve; Kristine; Celibate in the City (still around, but more sporadic); Rebecca at VSoM; Bob and Logan.com; Ryan Bell underposting
Write in category: I’m done writing, sorry. :)

  42. Actually, Pris, it is a different Adrianne. The MMW fight was with a non-Mormon blogger from DC, not Minnesota Adrianne. We really need to start instituting a mandatory differentiation rule.

    Comment by NFlanders — December 7, 2005 @ 1:05 pm

  43. Unsung hero: Russ Johnston. He wrote the code that makes the ldsblogs.org (“The Gateway to the Bloggernacle” no less) work. And he did it just out of the goodness of his heart. He’s so unsung that half of the MA founders still think we are talking about Rusty when his name comes up!

  60. Best blog: T&S. Yea I obviously prefer M*. But I think we’re still working towards being as consistently good as T&S. I think were getting there. But honesty is worth it. T&S sets the standard for group blogs. Even when it’s had trouble or gone through slow periods it usually recovers.

Best small blog: MoBlo. This is the small blog no one seems to be reading. I really like Chris’ comments and not just because he’s my brother. Runner up would be Mormon Wasp who has continually astoundingly great posts on LDS history.

Best blogger: Nate Oman, Jeffrey D. Giliam, Jared at LDS Science, Geoff at NCT, and Ben S at M*.

Best commenter: Hmm. Harder one to pick out just one person. I’d say Jeffrey, Daniel Petersen when he makes an appearance, and Ben S. When Jim F. makes a comment I always enjoy it as well. He’s unusually thoughtful.

Best new blog: What counts as new? I read a lot, if they are on the bloggernacle aggregator. I’d probably say RT at Liberation Front.

Best post: FAIR Conference Transcripts at M*; Jeffrey’s The Main Issue.

Best thing about the bloggernacle 2005: Hmm. Keeps me thinking about stuff?

Worst thing about the bloggernacle 2005: The recent advent of serious trolling of all the blogs. Runner up is the running out of ideas by many people.

    Unsung hero: Jeffrey D. Giliam.
Sorely missed: Lyle. What happened to your blog?

    ///I’d have to agree

    Comment by Bryce I — December 7, 2005 @ 4:30 pm

  62. Just to add two more additions to my above.

Best thing in 2005: rise of podcasts. I thought I’d hate them but I love them. I could easily put Mormon Stories in the category of best new blog as well, now that I think about it, since he has an associated blog.

I should add that Spinozist Mormon probably ought be up there with RT for new blog as well.

    Comment by Clark Goble — December 7, 2005 @ 4:30 pm

  63. “Best new blog: What counts as new? ”

In my mind, a new blog is any blog that got off the ground this year. Hence my Bloggernacle Times pick.

Hey, has nobody thought of silly names? M* does the Blogscars, so maybe these can be called the Blemmies. Or, since Bropther Ronan is to blame, the Blimey’s.

    Comment by Adam Greenwood — December 7, 2005 @ 5:05 pm

  64. the Blimey’s

    Lol.

    Nice Adam.

The other advantage to that name is that it gives a subtle pirate-ish feel to the award — and that is always a good thing.

    Best Doctrine Post
    Best History Post
    Most Beautifully Written Post
    Most Powerful Post
    Funniest Post
    Most Incomprehensively Intellectual Post*

*two guesses who’ll win this category

    Comment by fMhLisa — December 8, 2005 @ 4:17 pm

  104. I’m not sure who’ll win it , frankly. I was going to say ‘Nate Oman,’ but his posts are always comprehensively intellectual.

Thank you so much, John Fowles. I still appreciate your poem ‘the Pearl.’ The bloggern in charge here will have to decide themselves, of course, but I wonder if its really fair to include my posts about my daughter in the ‘Best Post’ contest? People will feel bad voting for other posts that might be objectively better. But she did die this year and it would be nice to acknowledge Betsey Pearl. Maybe she can just be a co-winner in the sorely missed category? Anyway, I leave it up to the bloggern in charge. If they want to leave the Betsey Pearl posts out entirely, even, that would be fine with me. Seeing people mention them, here, makes me think they’re thinking of here, and that’s enough for me.

  107. oh yeah, and i really like “strange pulse” and kulturlblog, although i don’t really consider them part of the b’nacle.

  108. “I’m not sure who’ll win it , frankly. I was going to say ‘Nate Oman,’ but his posts are always comprehensively intellectual.”

to you maybe, but to mere mortals . . .

    Comment by fMhLisa — December 8, 2005 @ 6:33 pm

  109. Oh, dear. Ma’am, I was just making a ‘comprehensive /comprehensible’ joke. I don’t always understand him either, and when I do, I usually have nothing to say. Shall I let you in on a secret? Lots of times when I’ve half-digested one of his posts I’ll comment just to comment, and then Nate O. will pretend like I’ve said something worthwhile. I think he sees me as sort of a mascot.

    Comment by Adam Greenwood — December 8, 2005 @ 7:53 pm

  110. Adam, if you’re the mascot, I’m curious as to what the team is?

Also, don’t sweat the nominations for Betsey Pearl. Your posts about have her were some of the most powerful things I have read anywhere all year. When I get around to nominating, they will be on my list.

Best blogger: Wilfried, SeptimusH, Kaimi, fMhLisa
Best commenter: Ronan, NFlanders, Annegb, Geoff J, Christian Cardell
Best new blog: Viva Ned Flanders
Best post: not very original, but I have to agree with the Betsy Pearl posts and Wilfried’s Coffee post. Also, all the great discussion heavy posts like the temple marriage ones, the being gay and lds ones, and the doctrinal heavy ones that Geoff J always writes about
Best thing about the bloggernacle 2005: Banner of Heaven posts, feeling of community
Worst thing about the bloggernacle 2005: angry feelings from so many people about so many things(!); and feeling so guilty when reading JMW’s reasons for leaving the bloggernacle

  115. We need a category that’s just Best Banner of Heaven Quotes and Exchanges. I bet we could come up with a long list. Heck, we there’s a long list of Aaron quotes alone. Here’s an exchange that still makes me laugh:

Jenn: DKL, those kinds of personal attacks are uncalled for.

DKL: Are you using the passive voice to make it sound like you speak for everyone? Let’s be specific: Uncalled for by whom? I, for one, have certainly called for them—as has Miranda on several occasions when she’s been uncommonly rude. All I can say is this: Speak for yourself, Jenn.

  116. Adam,
Dito what John C. said in #110. If one day the bloggernacle is no more and we’ve all moved on to other pursuits, I can honestly say the one thing from this that I know will remain with me is the story of your sweet daughter and her fathers eternal love for her.
    Thank you for that.

  117. “Oh, dear. Ma’am, I was just making a ‘comprehensive /comprehensible’ joke.”

    Adam,
One thing I can promise you, is that I will NEVER get a joke based on spelling humor. For whatever reason, my brain can’t seem to process those details. But now that you explained it . . . Har.

And for the record, I too am a big fan of your Betsy Pearl posts. Well, if you can call sobbing for an hour a big-fan kind of behavior.

    Comment by fMhLisa — December 9, 2005 @ 1:57 pm

  118. I think instead of nominating “best blog” and “best small blog” you should nominate “best group blog” and “best solo blog”. I personally like most of the solo blogs better than the group blogs, but whatever way you look at it, there’s a different dynamic that comes with a group blog.

I would also like to nominate The Golden Road, Every Day I Write the Book , Mormon Mommy Wars, and Conversation.

  119. #86–You had cabins at girl’s camp? That’s okay, I like roughin’ it better anyhow. Sorry you haven’t felt welcome at FMH. Maybe you’ll give us a fresh start in the New Year?

    Favorite blog: T&S
Favorite small blog: 9M, Splendid Sun
    Favorite solo blog: Ethesis
Favorite bloggers: too many to list! Okay, Jim F. & Wilfried
Favorite commenters: Prudence and Christain C
Favorite new blog: don’t know ’cause I’m new, too
Favorite post: Why Your Comment Didn’t Get an Answer (T&S)

Favorite comment: Mike’s raw depiction of why the atonement can’t possibly mean what some people think it means (T&S–I’ll look for the link)

Favorite discussion: Endocannibalism & Sacrament (T&S)
Favorite phrase: “intellectually useless” (Nate O on FMH–hasn’t been back since, I don’t believe)
    Best cameo apprearance: Sonja Johnson

Best thing about the bloggernacle 2005: its contribution to me going back to church; those who recognize, welcome, and encourage dialog with newcomers (like Jim F.); benefit of the doubt, good humor, and forgiveness

Worst thing about the bloggernacle 2005: time warp; FMH not entering the fellowship of the big three (should be four); TMI; profanity; increase in need for supervision by permabloggers

Unsung hero: for FMH, J Stapley
    Sorely missed: Rosalynde
Write in category: second (third?) best design: FMH

  122. Favorite blog: Viva Ned Flanders!
    Favorite big blog: BCC
    Favorite small blog: Mormon Wasp
Favorite bloggers: fmhLisa, Wilfried, Ned Flanders
Favorite commenters: Prudence, Stephen M (Ethesis), annegb

Best thing about the bloggernacle 2005: The RSR threadjack (Now! with Pr0n!) at M*, which pushed me to choose between participating here and continuing to wallow in disaffected Mormon crap.

Worst thing about the bloggernacle 2005: Banner of Heaven crap – all of it – the blog, the lies, the brouhaha, the hurt feelings, the drama, the excuses, the fake apologies, the Tribune article (proud? proud?!) ,the way everybody pretends like nothing happened and everything is the same now.

    Sorely missed: Kristine Haglund Harris

  123. Two great commenters I stupidly forgot the first time round: New Order Ann and Mild Ride Ed.

    Comment by Zardoz — December 10, 2005 @ 1:51 pm

  124. I also forgot to add Ann in the commenter category, as well as B/Beijing.

    Comment by Wendy — December 10, 2005 @ 4:53 pm

  125. Best blog: Times and Seasons
Best small blog: A Motley Vision
Best blogger: Russell Arben Fox; Patricia Gunter Karamesines; Adam Greenwood

Best thing about the bloggernacle 2005: high quality stuff–your average month or two of the best blogs sometimes has more good stuff than an installment of Dialogue and BYU Studies. Recent RSR discussion is a prime example.

Worst thing about the bloggernacle 2005: self-referentiality, poor discussion threads (problems with blogging in general to be sure)
Unsung hero: the family members and others who have demands upon the time of prolific bloggers and commenters(j/k).

    Comment by Jeremiah J. — December 10, 2005 @ 8:10 pm

  126. Yeah, allow me to second A Motley Vision. That is a good blog!

    Further nominations for best post:
Why I’m Thankful“, “South Park, Peepstones, and Mormon General Knowledge“, “Women and the Priesthood, Part I“, “Polygamy: Joseph vs. Brigham“, “A Doctrinal Debate“, all three BCC Roundtables, “Theory and Doctrine, and our Horrible and Beautiful Lives“, “The Gifts of the Spirit are Gone“, “The “Culture” Cop Out“, “Where Are the Great Mormon Minds?“.

Well, that’s the BCC batch (by the way, where has HL Rogers gone?). More to come…

    Comment by John C. — December 10, 2005 @ 8:59 pm

  127. I don’t care what category you put him in, but please, PLEASE, give Jeff Lindsay over at Mormanity an award! Any time my mom comes at me with some factoid about why I am insane to be Mormon, Jeff helps me bail myself out. Give the man a ribbon- I know I am not the only one!

    Comment by Tracy M — December 12, 2005 @ 1:33 am

  128. Best Blogger — Julie Smith, Rosalynde Welch
Sorely Missed — Arwyn (Imagination’s Fool/Monastery of Idealism)
    Unsung Hero — Stephen (Ethesis)
Commenter — Prudence McPrude (who makes me laugh consistently)

I’d nominate that “T&S goes Millennial Star” gag as the April Fool’s Joke of the year, but a) there’s not that many jokes that could win, and b) it was so well done I had to be told it was a joke. And that’s only partly because I was looking at the site without nearly enough sleep.
