Jan/Feb Mini-Niblets*

By: BT Editors - March 5, 2010

The Niblets are back at BT for the first time since 2005! (2006, 2007, 2008, 2009)

We hereby solicit nominations for the best posts from around the Bloggernacle for Jan-Feb 2010.

______

*Given that “Niblets” already implies a certain mininess, we hereby also solicit a better name.

  5. Actually, in honor of Nibley, we should render these mini-Niblets with the diminutive pattern known from Aramaic and Arabic (which Nibley wrongly applied to Mulek “little king”, as there’s no trace of this diminutive in Hebrew)-

That is if a SHaJaRa is a tree, a SHuJayR is a diminutive tree, i.e. a bush. The pattern is CuCayC.

But wait! Niblet is a quadra-consonantal, not a triconsonantal root!

Consulting Wolfdietrich Fischer’s Grammar of Classical Arabic (trans. Jonathon Rodgers), §82a, we learn that quadra-consonantal diminutives take the form CuCayCiC.

So, the diminutive form of Niblet would be NuBayLiT, or, once we resolve the diphthong, Nub?lit.

    Vote in the bi-monthly Nubelits.

  6. Hmmm.

When it’s late and I’m looking for something to nibble on, I usually go for crackers.

But maybe “crackers” still isn’t quite “mini” enough to describe a Jan-Feb bloggernacle roundup … so how about “crack” ??

That said, I’d be surprised to find any “crack” here at BT.

Because, judging by this post, you’ve already smoked it all.

Actually, Cracker PERFECTLY captures this crowd.

  10. OK…and now for more nominations!

  11. I nominate the Pierien Spring for best new blog of the beginning of the year.
I nominate Smallaxe’s “imposed openness” at FPR as most useful post.

  12. Maybe I should say why I liked the above posts. A lot of posts are interesting, or they draw a lot of discussion or even argument. But most of the time after I finish reading, my opinion about the topic hasn’t really changed at all. Sometimes it is even more fixed against whatever controversial thing is being discussed.
But all of these changed my mind in some way about some assumptions I held.

In fact, although it’s obvious to everybody what a fantastic writer Kathy Soper is, at first I didn’t like her Fleshy Tablets post at all. It took a second reading and some thought on my part to decide that I like it quite a lot.

  13. I nominate Edje’s 7 part series on Mormon Horns for it’s fascinating content and Quinn-esque footnotes.

Also, the new series: Women in the Academy with Rachel Cope as the first interviewee in the series.

Elizabeth’s thoughtful piece on receiving the endowment.

A two part post about what happened when a missionary in the 1880s wrote back home to tell his first wife that he’d taken a second one. Part 1 [must be read first], Part 2.

  14. Nubbins?

    Comment by Scott — March 6, 2010 @ 2:18 pm

  15. Wow, thanks, C. Jones.

For their thought-provoking effect, I nominate:

    1. John Crawford’s Everything That Is Wrong with Gospel Teaching series at BCC

    2. Brad Kramer’s Death, Mortality, and the Fall at BCC

    3. Marintha’s Sam and Sally series at Segullah

  16. Nibbles.

    Comment by Kathryn Soper — March 6, 2010 @ 4:25 pm

  17. Kathryn beat me to it. Nibbles is what I’d have suggested.

  18. Is it just posts, because all things Jason Wharton deserve recognition.

    Comment by John C. — March 6, 2010 @ 10:10 pm

  19. What John said. I dust my virtual feet off on any awards which don’t include Jason Wharton’s contribution this quarter.

    Comment by Scott — March 7, 2010 @ 3:33 pm

  20. I say it should be called “Los Niblitos.”

    Comment by Jared T. — March 7, 2010 @ 4:04 pm

  21. Nibletets. Thanks for the nod, Kathy. Meanwhile, for my money, the depression series that Kathy put together at BCC is some of the best, and most genuinely helpful and productive Mormon blogging we’ve yet seen in the nacle. Bravo, young lady.

  22. All this Niblets and crackers talk is just making me think of Nilla wafers. Mmm….

I’m a lurker, but I feel like I should give kudos to some posts I’ve really appreciated:

Married to a Sugar Mama by Derek

“Well Done, Sister Suffragettes” by NatalieK.

The Living with Depression series at BCC, though perhaps that should be saved up for a regular Niblets when the series ends.

I’ve also really enjoyed the Thursday Morning Quickies at BCC. :)

mfranti’s 35 Years post sparked some really excellent, unconventional posts.

In case it’s not obvious, I really only read FMH and BCC….

  23. All this crackers talk just makes me think of how McCain was recently reminded: “We’re not campaigning anymore. The election is over.”

I take it that “Nilla wafers” is the new slang term for the birthers of the bloggernacle? The crew that doesn’t just want a new name for an old contest, they apparently want a whole new election. Rock on, crackers.

  24. I second Matt W.’s nominations. The Pierian Spring blog is superb. Great post on Joseph Smith’s Revelations on Preexistence and Spirits here: http://thepierianspring.wordpress.com/2010/02/15/joseph-smith-revelations-on-preexistence-and-spirits/

I also found SmallAxe’s “Imposed Openness” insightful.
