The winning touchdown pass came on the last play of the game with 0:00 on the clock. Never again will they be able to say John Beck cannot win a close game.
Un-freaking-believable. I could not believe that play. That whole drive. Simply amazing. That was the greatest BYU play I have ever witnessed. There are few that could match it.
Whew. Although for two and a half quarters BYU had returned to be the BYU of last year. But credit Beck those last two drives. If there were any remaining concerns about close games he eliminated it. (Although I was pretty worried in the 2cd and 3rd quarters)
With all the big upsets today it’ll be interesting to see how our rankings end up, even if it wasn’t the blowout most of us were expecting.
That was an amazing game, hats off to the Y, they were the better team today. Even with Ratliff playing the best he has all year we still couldn’t come up with the W.
I was surprised we played as well as we did as our QB play and D line play has been suspect all year long.
I liked the gesture of good sportsmanship between Weddle and Beck after the game, too often the rivalry has had too many cheap shots and stupid personal fouls (this game has its fair share but less than either of the past couple years).
The announcing crew was obviously pro-VYU but not to the point that it was too annoying (and understandable as most were Y alumni). The officiating was decent with each team getting its fair share of calls in a game that had many close calls. I would’ve liked to have seen the refs let them play a little more as it seemed there was a lot of pass interference calls that were ticky-tack.
And at the end of the day, SPECIAL TEAMS WINS GAMES! If Sakota makes the FG early in the game, BYU is driving for a tie, not a win (and if they made their XP they’re going for a win either way but still…) And along those lines, I can’t complain too much about the officiating since they botched an obvious roughing the kicker on a Y punt.
As for the rallying cry, as BYU has said for the last 4 years, ‘WAIT TIL NEXT YEAR!’
Go Utes!

Re 8,
… as opposed to the OTHER Ohio State University. I’m glad we got that clarified.

Before that final play with 3 sec on the clock I was going to nominate Coates as player of the game. We needed someone to step up and he was the guy who really gave Beck someone to nail. Fui tried but oddly everytime he tried pumping the team up they stopped calls to him. The camera work was bad enough that I couldn’t see if that was due to poor play calling or good Utah defense. It seemed like if he had one bad play they’d stop going to him, which I think was a mistake. He really was trying to get the offense motivated when Utah had all the momentum from the end of the 1st quarter on. But Coates was the one who actuall let it happen.
I’ll also say the officiating was horrible. With pretty blatant bad calls going either way. I still can’t believe they didn’t call that roughing the kicker.
More than delighted with this game! I was heartsick as the U figured out how to score, defend, and (apparently) win. The final play will linger long in my memory.
With all that, I still feel had for paying $14.95 for internet streaming that only had action in a corner of the screen, gave open-mike chatter of the announcers when they believed they were off-mike — including what should be denounced as a racist “boy” remark about a black BYU player, had weird replay sequences, and kept jamming.
It is correct that I am not happy about a certain team’s one win season. However, that was not the source of my comment. I don’t want to waste much time here describing what sort of man Curtis Brown is(n’t), so I’ll direct you all to the discussion at Blognative Dissonance.

Meanwhile, UTexas lost to Texas A&M because of a bad call by the ref that lost UT a touchdown.
But, whatever. My father in law (a UofU grad) will be upset.

UT deserved to lose, anyway.
Still, in the only important game that matters (last week), THE Ohio State University is still undefeated and #1.

just watched the best-of video blurb on CSTV.com (if someone has a link to more complete footage, please let me know).
Whoa. That was a great pass.

SportsCenter showed it three times, the last one being the top play of the day (of their top 10 countdown). And I think it deserved it too.

For me, though, the player of the game is Harline. Beck had to throw it to someone.

ARJ and I are still upset and the horrible year our team (hint: PAC-10, starts with an “S”) had this year.
